Mohiner Ghoraguli

Moheener Ghoraguli was a pioneering Bengali rock band from Kolkata that changed the way Bengali music could sound and feel. Formed in 1975 under the leadership of Gautam Chattopadhyay, the group blended Bengali folk and Baul traditions with rock, jazz, blues, and Western folk influences. Their style was sometimes described as “Baul jazz.”

What made Moheener Ghoraguli special was not only their music but also their lyrics. Their songs often spoke about everyday life, society, personal emotions, loneliness, and the changing world around them. At a time when Bengali film music dominated the popular scene, their experimental sound was something genuinely different.

The band remained active until 1981 and initially struggled to receive widespread recognition. However, their music found a new audience years later. Gautam Chattopadhyay's compilation albums in the 1990s helped introduce their songs to a younger generation, bringing renewed appreciation for the band's work.

The name “Moheener Ghoraguli,” meaning “Moheen's horses,” was inspired by a poem by Bengali modernist poet Jibanananda Das. Today, the band is remembered as one of the most influential pioneers of Bengali rock, with a musical legacy that continues to inspire listeners and musicians.
