Rupam Islam

Rupam Islam is one of the most recognisable voices in Bengali rock music. Born on 25 January 1974 in Kolkata, West Bengal, he is a singer, songwriter, composer and writer. He is best known as the lead vocalist of the Bengali rock band Fossils, a group that has played an important role in shaping the modern Bangla rock scene.

Music was part of Rupam’s life from an early age. Coming from a musical family, he started performing when he was young and appeared on All India Radio and Doordarshan programmes by the age of nine. Before choosing music as his full-time career, he also worked as an English teacher in Kolkata.

Rupam began his professional musical journey with Fossils in the late 1990s. His powerful voice, energetic performances and often intense, thoughtful lyrics helped the band develop a distinctive identity. Alongside his work with Fossils, he has built a successful solo career and has contributed as a playback singer to Bengali films.

One of the biggest milestones of his career came in 2010, when he won the National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer for Mahanagar@Kolkata. He has also released several solo albums and written books.

With his unique style and lasting connection with Bengali audiences, Rupam Islam continues to be an influential figure in Bengali music.
